Principles and Practice of Forensic Nursing (3 credits)
Principles and Practice of Forensic Nursing is the introductory course to forensic nursing. The six day course provides the student with core knowledge necessary to understand and assimilate into practice as a forensic nurse. Topics include: The Foundation of Forensic Nursing, Violence and Victimology, The Forensic Nurse Examiner, Forensic Evidence Collection, and Courtroom Testimony. This course is a power packed week of lecture, discussion, and class participation that challenges the student to synthesize information and apply it to the courtroom setting. Criminalistics, Forensic Science & the Forensic Nurse (4 credits)
Criminalistics, Forensic Science, and the Forensic Nurse provides the nurse with the founding principles of the forensic sciences. The course will include lecture, demonstration and hands on experiments that allow the student to gain a true understanding behind the methodologies used to preserve, collect, transmit, and process forensic specimens. This course also covers the application of biology physics and chemistry to forensic science as they relate to the criminal investigative and forensic nursing process. Forensic science areas include blood and body fluid analysis, hair & fiber comparison, firearm evidence, paints, glass, and soil analysis, deoxyribonucleic acid identification techniques and forensic imaging. Interpersonal Violence (3 credits)
Forensic nurses are called to respond to patients with interpersonal violence issues. The Interpersonal Violence course prepares the forensic nurse with a basis of understanding about how violence affects patients, the healthcare system, the community, and the world. Criteria for classifying violence are explored and the psychodynamics of offender and victim behaviors is covered. This course will dispel many myths and require the student to look at the very definition of humanity. Legal Nurse Consulting (3 credits)
The Legal Nurse Consultant course prepares registered and advanced practice nurses for a career in the legal field as a Legal Nurse Consultant (LNC) and testifying expert. The LNC will be prepared to work with attorneys and other professionals in various settings such as law firms, health care facilities, corporate legal departments, insurance companies, managed care agencies and governmental agencies. The LNC will be able to synthesize nursing background and clinical expertise with a basic foundation in legal studies.
